New Spitway Completed in Time for Seed Spitting Compitition |
|
The world famous Official Watermelon Spitway is being reworked for 2008. The spit way is located between two buildings in downtown Luling, Texas.
For 2008 the spit way is being covered with a permanent roof in order to diminish wind effects and shade the audience and the participants from the June sun beating down on them. Added lighting will ensure every one will have a good view of the fun. By reducing random factors, pure spitting talent will have even more importance in our watermelon seed spitting competitions. The next world record will be set by pure spitting ability alone without help from the wind.
The spit way is an important part of this four day festival. Past spitting participants have come from such far away places as Norway and Japan to participate. All states of our union are represented at the yearly Thump too! Citizens from Hawaii and Alaska have attended our festival.
Originally the world champion watermelon seed spitting spit offs were held in the middle of the main downtown street (Davis Street). Several years ago, in order to improve spitting conditions and give more room to the ever growing Thump festival attendees, the spit way was moved to its current location between two downtown buildings. The Luling Spit Way was the first watermelon spitting venue of it's kind. With bleachers during spitting competitions, an official watermelon slice shaped spitting pad, toe fault line and spitting zone, the official spit way really added to the whole affair. Since the Thump's inception of the Official Watermelon Spitway, other watermelon festivals are following Luling's lead and are instituting spit ways of their own. Luling is happy to claim our spitway as the FIRST!
